When I started this blog back in 2014, I never imagined I’d end up with more than 400 posts. What began as a casual way to share my everyday life as a music teacher slowly grew into a huge collection of lesson ideas, printable resources, and folk songs.
The sad thing is, I didn’t think about organizing everything until I was several years in. By then, I had so many posts that putting together a spreadsheet of links and resources felt impossible. Looking back, I really wish I’d started organizing from the beginning. I don’t want you to feel that same frustration with your own folk song collection. So…

I created a song library template that I think will be helpful for both new and experienced music teachers. Even after narrowing the categories down to the most practical ones, I still ended up with fifteen. You can keep what you need, add what you want, and delete the rest. Most columns have a drop-down menu, making them easy to customize the options for each category.
- Song Title
- Source/Link
- Culture/Tradition
- Rhythm Focus
- Melodic Focus
- Pitch Range
- Key/Mode
- Meter
- Form
- Part Work
- Game/Activity Type
- Materials Used
- Season
- Occasion/Celebration
- Grade Level
If you’re a new music teacher or just looking for some inspiration, you can view my blog post database. It’s much different than the template I shared above, but it makes searching and filtering my blog posts super easy. It’s a work in progress (with some missing information), but it does contain most of the folk songs I’ve covered over the years.
