Nevertheless, “be the change” inspires self-reflection. It reminds us that we can only change the world by first changing ourselves. We cannot expect others to treat us with kindness and dignity, if we ignore others’ pain.
In this way, music is a great healer. It can unify the hearts of the most staunch enemies with a crowd singing the national anthem. It unifies people of all backgrounds to make music in orchestras, bands, and choirs. All who sing, play an instrument, or tap to the beat are privy to the transformational power of music.
As you make music with your students this week, I hope you think of those three, powerful words. I hope you recognize that you are a maker of positive change in this world. Thank you.
