This lesson is a supplement to Arvida Steen’s song “Leaves.” It helps students in grades Kβ2 tell high from low with their bodies, their voices, and xylophones. Students follow leaf trails with their voices, move to the song, play high and low bars with glissandos, perform from iconic notation, and compose with leaf cutouts.

Wish there was something higher than 4 stars! Perfect multi-week lesson with everything included. I use this in fall to work with my first grade students on vocal exploration, singing, playing xylophones, high/low, steady beat vs. rhythm, composing melodic contour, and composing high/low xylophone patterns. Comprehensive and beautiful!

I used this lesson with my first graders and they LOVED it. The students really enjoyed coming to the board to point while the class followed in singing the leaf trails. Also, I REALLY liked the xylophone cut out so students could create their own compositions.
