(9 customer reviews)
Category: Topic: Grade Level: Concept: Type: Formats: , ,

This winter melody game helps students in grades K–2 practice do, re, and mi. Mischievous squirrels have snatched things all over the neighborhood, and students “pitch snowballs” to knock each item out of the trees by matching or singing do-re-mi patterns.

What’s included

  • Match It, a game where students match the do-re-mi pattern they hear to the pattern on the screen
  • Sing It, a game where students sight-sing do-re-mi patterns
  • Audio in Match It, so students can check their answers
  • Clickable icons for moving through the game
  • Directions and ideas for use

Formats

  • PDF
  • Google Slides: A link to the Match It game is included in your download and lets you add your own copy to Google Drive. Sing It doesn’t have a Google Slides link, but you can upload the PowerPoint to Google Drive and it works the same way.
  • PowerPoint

Important

  • The games must be in presentation mode, in PowerPoint or Google Slides, for the clickable icons and audio to work.

Ways to use it

  • A winter review of do, re, and mi
  • Match It on a sub day, since students can check their own answers with the audio
  • To have students compose with do, re, and mi next, pair it with Composing with Do, Re, and Mi.

Standards (NCAS)

  • Performing: Anchor Standard 4 (select, analyze, and interpret artistic work for presentation)
  • Responding: Anchor Standard 7 (perceive and analyze artistic work)

So much fun! They even liked getting the wrong answer to see “Aw, Nuts!” on the screen! We did the Match It so far, but I think we’ll be reading to sight sing before the end of Winter! I would also love to see an expansion sometime!

This was a great activity to get my students started with reading music. They especially loved the Match It PPT (this sightsinging was still a bit over their heads). It was so fun to hear them giggle at all the crazy things the squirrels took up the tree.
Hoping that there will be an expansion with more than 8 examples 🙂
