In a little over a month, the Indy 500 will mark its 101st year. As a native hoosier, this race marks the beginning of summer weather and late-night bonfires. It also seems to come around faster every year, which is probably just a consequence of getting older. Anyway…
I must confess that I’ve never been to the Indy 500, nor do I have any interest in going. However, I am interested in songs that grab kids’ attention and keep them moving, and All Around the Race-Track does just that.
CIRCLE GAME
- Students stand in a circle, singing and clapping the steady beat throughout the song.
- One student walks (to the beat) counterclockwise inside the circle.
- During “Now show me your motion…” the student improvises a movement.
- During “Who loves sugar…”, the student chooses another student to be in the middle.
- Allow shy students time to observe by asking for volunteers and choosing among the students who are eager to go first.
- When it’s time for students to choose another person to go to the center, encourage them to only pick someone whose hand is raised.
- If you were a shy student, tell your class that. Then, smile and join in the singing and dancing. Shy kids need to know that they’re not alone. We may be quiet, but we’re also mighty!
Students were always surprised to hear that I was a shy kid, especially since I was often so goofy and outgoing in front of them (adults were another matter). Kids were equally surprised when I said that there was “absolutely nothing wrong” with being shy.

SYNCOPATION
TEACHER TIP: If you donβt have access to rhythm instruments, substitute with body percussion.
That’s all for today’s post. However, if you’re a newsletter subscriber, keep a close eye on your inbox this week. I foresee an extra special goody in your future!!

What a great song to add to my "syncopa toolbox"! I have never heard of this song before but it looks like great fun. Thanks as always for finding such gems!
Thanks Elizabeth! I feel honored that it's going in your toolbox π
What a fun looking song! I had never heard of this one before. I bet my students will love it. I also really appreciate what you said about shy kids. As a shy person myself, it's always nice to feel validated π
Yes. I think it's so easy for teachers to forget about the shy students because they aren't causing disruptions. It's only been in the last few years that I've started to notice a few more articles pertaining to this issue. Hopefully it's an issue that gains ground over the years.
